Why we don’t like Rahman’s songs first time?
This is what someone had searched for in Google and my blog comes up as a result for that. I wanted to see what other results came up for this search term. That’s where I came across this interview with Srinivas that Prabhu has mentioned in this post.
Coming back to the question, I have attempted to answer it here. One thing about most of Rahman’s songs is that you would never have heard anything like that before! So, naturally it might take sometime to like that song. Take for example, some of Harris Jeyaraj’s songs like Oru Nadhi (Samurai), Mudhal Mudhalai (Laysa Laysa) and Kadhalikkum Aasai (Chellamey), don’t they all sound similar? (No offense meant to any HJ fans out there. I too like these songs.) The point I am trying to make is since we had already liked and enjoyed one of these songs, the moment we listen to the others, though we say that they sound similar we do like it immediately. That is not the case with Rahman’s music.
Now speaking as a Rahmaniac, I will listen to a Rahman’s song till I like it! I strongly believe that the man who gave us songs like Chinna Chinna Aasai, Dil Se Re, etc. would never give something that is not good. So, if I don’t like a song the first time, I will keep on listening to it and will eventually find Rahman’s magic in it. So it’s not that we don’t like some of Rahman’s songs the first time we listen to it, it’s just that it takes some time for the music to grow on you.

mmm. i can see a blend of approach in the post. one being a music lover u picked up certain samples and conveyed his songs are grt8. other is being a staunch a.r.rish u tempted to say its gud.
well its a known fact that his songs reach-out audience ( normal audience who occupies major part of the diagram ) in a frogged pace because he is using good patterns of music in a different vistas. lot of experimentations being done by grt8 genious.
take Duet - Mettupodu Mettupodu song … simple song orchestration nothing but vanilla Hamasdhavani. Its all a magic from him to till now. no words as a lame music listener.
Well esp tamil music history we are blessed to have good music souls time n again. My conculsion is its not-only ARR few others also experiment a lot and gave grt8 music.
you can try to munch The Blast Album - Mama-Mama song by Yuvan Shanker raja. Simple carnatic song with grt8 rendering and composition ( abheri i guess) not sure.
Check out bloggers music community blogswara ( u may be knowning it ).. vol -2 songs are good.. mela mela ( nattai based one ), enna-acthu etc etc.
music occupies every where its we inhaling it..

First of all, Mettu podu is in Ananda Bhairavi.
Agreed others give good music too but, unlike ARR they give what I call sub-standard stuff (read Dappankutthu. I hate those.)
I will surely chk out all those songs that u hav mentioned and no need to say sorry and all, you are most welcome to share your thoughts.

one more thing is that everytime u listen to rahman’s songs, there’s something different in it.. take suttum vizhi from ghajini.. everybody was crazy abt that song initially, but not so now.. whereas take any song of ARR, they are just fabulous and fresh everytime u listen to it, be it tere bina or chinna chinna aasai. that is his magic!

Its not cos of the fact tht im not too crazy abt rahman..(well rahmaniac is the verb huh??like googling??;) ) Well u have already mention Harris’s few compositions r quite similar.. like oru nadhi, mudhal mudhalai… which means tht oru nadhi song was liked by evry1 on the 1st go(which was composed b4 mudhal mudhalai song)..This is wat u have indiretly implied.. then y not rahman impress evry1 like tht on the 1st go??offlate not even one song i seem to find appealing the 1st time i hear..

Hell’s Angel/Brindha, You have been my friend for such a loooong time and till now u didn’t know about the ‘verb’ (if that’s what u want to call it) Rahmaniac! :O
Now coming to what u have said, when did I ever say that I liked Oru nadhi the first time I listened to it? And why should Rahman try to impress anybody? He knows there are thousands of fans out there who are mad about what he is composing now! Why should you listen to some song again and again if it doesn’t appeal to you the first time?
You know how I am when it comes to talking about Rahman’s music. So I don’t care if I sound very biased about Rahman & his music.

First time here…came from Sonata’s blog…interesting observation which is something I had concluded about Rahman’s songs too…The more and more we hear his songs…the more it absorbs us….but contrary to that if you take Ilayaraja’s songs…they are evergreen..catches you first and ever after that…never leaves….

Rahman is not living 4 music.
Its the music that lives 4 Rahman
