Rain Songs

Rains have started in Chennai and celebrating the rains, here is a post on some of my favourite rain songs. The list of songs is in no particular order.

Barso Re – Guru

Let me start with a Rahmanโ€™s song. Barso Re is the first song that I first watched/ listened to from Guru. The first look of the song made me fall in love with it immediately. The rains, the locations, Shreya Goshalโ€™s voice and more importantly Rahmanโ€™s music were all so fresh. In the first listening itself, one can decide that this song is the one that you will want to listen to if you want to celebrate something! ๐Ÿ™‚ The way the song starts with Aishwarya Rai tapping her hands on the walls for the beats and rain drops fall is so nice. Though I felt that everything about the song was perfect when I watched the song full-length in theatre, my opinion has changed now. I donโ€™t like Aishwarya Raiโ€™s dance sequences that much. I feel it could have been better.

Then Maerkku Paruva Kaatru – Karutthamma

This song too starts with wonderful fast beats! When you watch the video of the song, the fast pace of the song is matched by the intensity with which the rain pours. Good choice of singers too.

Maegam Vandhadho โ€“ Mouna Raagam

Only Mani Ratnam can make a girl, who is under so much tension with the burden of lost love in her mind and the thought of a guy sitting in her house waiting to get married to her in all probability, dance with joy along with her friends in the rain. ๐Ÿ™‚ (Oops have I started writing serious stuff here? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) This is a typical Ilayaraja song, nice song though. Not great picturization but. Earlier, I often used to get this song mixed up with Vaan Maegam song from Punnagai Mannan maybe because both had Revathy dancing in the rain wearing a similar dark-coloured costume.

Koi Ladki Hai โ€“ Dil To Pagal Hai

One of Udit Narayanโ€™s best! Those were the times when one can listen to a song just for his voice alone! I like watching Madhuri, Sharukh and Karishma happily dancing in the rains.

Saawan Barse Tarse Dil – Dahek

I donโ€™t really know why I like this song. It doesnโ€™t have great music or extraordinary picturization! But, I never get tired of watching it. This is a bit slow song. Akshay Kanna and Sonali Bendre getting all dressed up, buying gifts for each other and all and fighting the rains to meet each other and when they finally do meet each other, you can feel the love in the air. Hariharan is the perfect singer for any kind of song and this song is no exception. Maybe thatโ€™s what made me start listening to this song in the first place. This song is so slow and soft that you can clearly listen to its lyrics and the lyrics perfectly matches the mood of the song.

Chinna Chinna Mazhai ThuLigaL โ€“ En Swaasa Kaatre

The picturization of this song is not that good. Itโ€™s boring to see Isha Kopikkar standing in the rains and staring at Arvind Samy sing the song. But, the music! Is anything even needed to be said about it when the music director in question is Rahman? ๐Ÿ˜‰ I like the opening music of the song with the words โ€˜Oru thuLi vizhudhuโ€™ following it.

Jo Haal Dil Ka โ€“ Sarfarosh

This is surely one of Jatin-Lalitโ€™s best. Again, those were the times when a lot of Hindi film songs were superb. But, look at the present quality of Hindi songs! Sigh! Talking about the song, I love the beats that run throughout the song in the background. Shot completely in rain, I like the use of bright-coloured costumes for Aamir Khan and Sonali in this song. Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik would have sung this song so well! Incidentally, Kumar Sanu is one singer whose voice I donโ€™t like much. This song and a few others are an exception.

There are lots more beautiful songs shot in rain. Now, letโ€™s hear from you all what your favourite rain songs are.

Whats a rain song collection without Andhi Mazhai?

And ofcourse the one from Punnagai Mannan. I liked it better than the one in Mouna Ragam. Mainly because of that bald uncle sitting inside a Premier Padmini and watching Revathy dance. I always wanted to sit inside a car when its raining heavily, looking at people on the road ๐Ÿ˜€ Now that I have a car, and am close to getting bald I would say my dream is close to coming true ๐Ÿ˜‰

You might not have heard this song. I think music is Shankar-Ganesh. Song is ‘mazhaiye mazhaiye’. Very nice melody.

Am not sure if Music Videos count. If yes, I like the bheegi bheegi raaton mein by Adnan Sami

And another old song. Mazhai mazhgai varudhu kudai koNdu vaa, kaNNe un maarapile from Raja Kaiya vachaa. Prabhu and Gowthami are there in this movie, I guess!

Mazhai mazhai song from Ullam Ketkume is good too.

And couldn’t resist posting this, though I know this is a U certificate blog. I like ‘Tip tip barsaa paani’ from Mohra.

Its too tough to fit rain songs in a single comment, young lady ๐Ÿ™‚

    Durga,
Yeah nice betas & nice song ๐Ÿ™‚

    Prabhu,
You want to sit inside the car and watch just people or people like Revathy dance? ๐Ÿ˜›
I have not listened to Mazhaiye mazhaiye and Tip tip barsa paani. Will do that asap.
Yup. Prabhu & Gowthami are there in the movie. That song is one of my favs too ๐Ÿ™‚
When it’s tough to fit rain songs in a single post itself, then comment will obviously be difficult ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Daneel,
    I haven’t watched that song!
I needn’t go for a wedding to write about my fav wedding songs ๐Ÿ™‚

To add to the list iof AR’s collection of ideal compositions to be heard during rains are Putham pudhu bhoomi – Thiruda Thiruda, Ghoomaparani – Forgotten Hero, Desert storm – WOHE, Bol Sajni (Some how though would have worked beautifully in rain).

Yes, GNB’s Amruthavarshini would have been magical…. Even Lalgudi’s version is so sublime and puts one in trance.

Finally at this very moment, it just feels to put all the work aside and listen to all these lovely compositions with the room window open and feeling the sounds and smell of the RAIN! Chennai has been so gorgeous for last few days that I am just running around with my camera :)!
