Double Bonanza!

Yesterday I went to both Sanjay Subrahmanyan’s and T.M.Krishna’s concerts. ๐Ÿ˜€ I am so happy that I got to hear my favourite singers back to back.

Sanjay Subrahmanyan’s Concert

Concert Duration: 2.5 hrs

Songs List:
1. Varnam – Kalyani – Ata Taalam

3. Bhuvinita – Sri Ranjani – Alapana, Neraval & Swarams at padamule
4. Aadum Deivam – Kambhoji – Alapana, Neraval & Swarams at thirupaadham thanjam ena unai adaindhaen (Main piece)

Pallavi: ambikai jagadambikai varaaLidho srutiyodu layamum tharaaLidho – Ata Taalam
6. Jaanati Raamam followed by Raamani Bhajitthaal – Maand

This concert had a nice Nattakurunji again! The Sriranjani and Kambhoji alapanas were excellent. These days, there seems to be no concert of Sanjay’s without RTP! So it was an amazing RTP in Subhapanatuvarali in this concert. More than the raagam and pallavi, I liked the taanam. With Arun Prakash playing, the tani avartanam was great. I left when Raamanai Bhajitthaal started and rushed to TMK’s concert.

T.M.Krishna’s Concert
Accompanists:
Mysore Manjunath – Violin
Karaikudi Mani – Mridangam
V.Suresh – Ghatam

Where & When? – Music Academy on 27th December at 7:00 pm

Concert Duration: 2.5 hrs

Songs List:
1. Varnam – Kedaragowlai
2. Sreenatadi Guruguha – Mayamalavagowlai – Raaga outline, swarams at Sreenatadi

7. Vaadinaen Vaadi (Viruttam) – Raagamalika (Sahana, Varali, Karaharapriya, Hamir Kalyani)
ThoomaNi Maadatthu – Hamir Kalyani
8. Krishnam Kalayasakhi – Mukhari
9. Nee Namarupamulanu – Sowrashtram

After going for 3 concerts of Sanjay in 4 days, it was nice to hear T.M.Krishna sing. ๐Ÿ™‚ Starting with Kedaragowlai varnam that he sings often, each and every song that followed was sung so beautifully by T.M.Krishna. I especially liked Bala kanakamaya and Amba paradevate (awesome swarams at the end!). The main in this concert was again Kambhoji! The Kambhoji alapana that lasted some 17 minutes was amazing! It was nice to see mari mari ninne being chosen for the main piece instead of the usual O Rangasayee or Tiruvadi Charanam. Though I absolutely enjoyed every moment of T.M.Krishna’s detailed Kambhoji alapana and the wonderful Kambhoji neraval and swarams and the lengthy Tani Avartanam that followed, I was disappointed that an RTP was not sung. I loved the tukkadas, ThoomaNi maadatthu and Krishnam Kalayasakhi.

As the concert came to an end, I was wondering about how Sanjay and T.M.Krishna both had the same 2 and a half hours and yet how Sanjay managed to package the concert in such a way that the audience got to hear an RTP too along with the same Kambhoji main raagam. Anyway, at the end of the day, I was so happy that I got to hear two excellent concerts by my favourite singers! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Arvind,
๐Ÿ™‚ For atleast the next two weeks, most of the posts here might be related to Carnatic music only

    Sriram,
๐Ÿ™‚ You are right. I would prefer to enjoy just the concert alone. In fact I didn’t eat even at a single canteen this Season!
