The first time I watched the trailer of this song, the colourful and joyous atmosphere, the foot-tapping beats, girls singing and dancing happily in a teasing tone and the eyes of the handsome hero and the heroine meeting each other were enough for me to like it instantly. I remember listening to the full song only after watching the trailer.

Dil To Pagal Hai
After a long time, I was back home by 7:30 itself in the evening, thanks to an early Sanjay’s concert today. Doing channel-surfing, I saw ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ was the movie coming on Set Max. Among Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kucch Kucch Hota Hai & Dil To Pagal Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai (and the songs of the movie too) used to be my favourite for a long time till one fine day when I got bored of it after seeing it telecast on TV so often.
Seeing it today after a long time, I thought I would watch it for a few minutes and change the channel. But I couldn’t stop watching it at all! :O The whistling of are re are ye kya hua, the BGM, the songs (I just love Dil To Pagal Hai, Are Re Are and Koi Ladki Hai), Udit Narayan at his best, the chemistry between Shahrukh and Madhuri, Madhuri and Karishma’s dance for ‘The Dance of Envy’ track, Madhuri’s salwar kameezs and the colours of some of her costumes and lots more! Watching this movie now has taken my memory back to my school days when this movie used to be a part of so much of chats with friends. 🙂
I still can’t believe that it has been a couple of hours since I switched on the computer to write about Sanjay’s concerts and instead have ended up writing this post now! :O Oops break has got over. Have to get back to watching the movie. 😉 Cya!
Father-Son Relationship in Mani Ratnam’s movies
I have often wondered about the portrayal of father-son relationship in Mani Ratnam’s movies.
Characters played by Murali & Sarath Babu in Pagal Nilavu, Mohan in Mouna Raagam, Kamal in Nayagan, Mammootty in Thalapathy, Arvind Samy in Roja, Prashanth and Anand in Thiruda Thiruda, Mohanlal in Iruvar, Madhavan in Kannathil Muthamittal and Suriya & Madhavan in Aayitha Ezhuthu – Father of none of these characters are alive. In Nayagan and Aayitha Ezhuthu, it is evident from some scenes that their fathers have had a positive influence on Kamal and Suriya.

Madhavan’s interview
Wishing you all a very Happy Diwali! 🙂
Till a couple of days back, it was said in the trailer & ads that there was going to be an interview with Madhavan on Kalaignar TV at 8 am today. With Sanjay’s concert on radio at 8:30 am, I was glad that I would be able to catch up with both the programmes. But when I was channel-surfing during the break in Jab We Met, which by the way, was telecast on Zee yesterday evening, I was surprised to see an interview with Madhavan on Kalaignar TV! I had no idea at all that they had changed the time. I watched only the last 10 minutes of the interview. 🙁 Seeing an interview with Madhavan at 8:15 am on Jaya TV today, I guess that must have been the reason why the time of the interview on Kalaignar TV must have been changed. God knows which channel first decided to air Madhavan’s interview at 8 am today!
Coming to today’s interview, I must tell you that it was a big bore. How many times will the ask him the same old questions like the difference between working in TV programmes & movies, how did the experience of working on TV programmes help him when he started working in films, how does his wife react to him having a huge female fan following, what kind of a student was he during college, etc.! One might as well and go & read/watch some old interview of his to know the answers to all these questions. 😐 The only new info that I came to know from today’s interview is his first day shooting experience of Snehidhane song.
Even the last few minutes of yesterday’s interview had nothing new. He was asked to share his experience of working with Kamal. Madhavan himself said that he is being asked this question in all the interviews during the last few years and went on talk about Kamal & the movie.
It’s high time the channels come up with new questions when interviewing someone!
Happy Birthday Mani Sir!
Wishing Mani Ratnam a very happy birthday! 🙂
Interview with Mani Ratnam
I enjoyed reading this wonderful interview with Mani Ratnam. A nice interview after a long time with none of the usual questions!
Bombay
At first look, this movie starts off as just another love story set in a village. A guy getting floored by the beauty of a girl – that’s all. Unlike Rishi (Arvind Samy) and Roja’s (Madhubala) in Roja or Karthik (Madhavan) and Shakti’s (Shalini) in Alaipayuthey or Manohar (Karthik) and Divya’s (Revathy) in Mouna Raagam or for that matter, even Gautam (Prabhu) and Anjali’s (Amala) in Agni Nakshatram, which are love stories where their initial courting scenes to the scene where they express their love for each other itself are some unforgettable scenes, with the dialogues making them all the more memorable, this movie doesn’t have any of those. Except for the scene where Shekhar (Arvind Samy) gets into the same boat as Shaila Bhanu’s (Manisha) and tells her of his love, there are practically no dialogues between the two of them. But that’s where the song, ‘Uyire’ comes in – there couldn’t have better words than the lyrics of the song to express their love for each other.

The Best Song Ever!
8 years it has been since the song got released. Still it is the only one song that I wouldn’t hesitate to call as my most favourite one among everything I have listened to till date. Be it Tamil, Telugu or Hindi, it is one of the few songs which sounds beautiful in all the languages, though I must admit that I don’t understand most of what is sung in Telugu. It does not matter whether it is Hariharan or Sonu Nigam who is singing it. Both their voices suit the song perfectly. And what should I say about the variety of emotions it evokes in me today? Whenever I remember all those wonderful times I spent with my sister discussing about this song endlessly after we first listened to it, both of us watching the video of this song on repeat mode almost every single day after watching the movie and becoming absolutely crazy about it, later listening to the Telugu version of this song and realizing that it sounds as nice as the Tamil version (unlike most of the songs) and listening to that too on repeat mode, the Hindi version too getting added to the list after a few years, all the while becoming more and more passionate about Rahman’s music and Mani Ratnam’s movies with every passing day – Oh it makes me so nostalgic! When I think of the times I have immediately cheered up on listening to/watching this song or when I found this song to be the greatest stress buster after a stressful day, all I can do is say a big thanks to Rahman and Mani Ratnam for giving us such a lovely song and wonder about the power of music! When I think of the times when I was so happy and watching/listening to this song made me all the more happy, I know that’s the magic of Rahman’s music and Mani Ratnam’s picturization of it only makes it all the more beautiful! And what about the times when just thinking/talking about this song, brought a smile to my face instantly? 8 long years and yet nothing has changed. Even today, our faces light up immediately if we see the song playing in one of the channels while channel surfing! Even today, this is the song that I turn to when I am so irritated with a lot of things or am feeling a bit stressed. Even today, I consider watching this song to be a great way to unwind at the end of the day. And even today, the mere mention of this song is enough to bring a smile to my face. 🙂 And till date, this song has remained THE best picturized song of Rahman and I am sure it is going to remain that way forever! The combination of A.R.Rahman’s music, Mani Ratnam’s excellent song picturization, Vairamuthu’s beautiful lyrics and P.C.Sreeram’s cinematography at its best! Now don’t tell me you don’t know which song this one is! 😉
Thalapathy
This category has been screaming for my attention for a very long time now and I am back with a post along with a note to myself to keep this category alive by updating it with more posts regularly.
Thalapathy is supposedly the story of the man fondly called by his friend as his Thalapathy. But, is it just the story of that man alone? This is yet another movie in which Mani Ratnam portrays the emotions felt by each and every character so beautifully! As far as Mani Ratnam’s movies are concerned, even if the movie itself does not have a great script (of course, this is not the case with this movie), most of the characters nevertheless, stand out and so do a lot of scenes.

Chak De
After hearing every other person rave about this movie, I finally watched it some days back. It felt great to watch a good Hindi movie after a long time and it also managed to help me forget the bad experience of watching Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, the last movie of Shahrukh that I saw. That is one movie that I wished I had not watched. It made me lose interest in watching Shahrukh’s movies!
Now, the storyline of Chak De is quite predictable right from the start to finish. You know Shahrukh is going to make the girls team eventually win the World Cup. You see a whole bunch of stereotyped people who are still not willing to believe that women do have a right to succeed in their chosen career and you know that at the end of the day, these very people will come forward and feel proud of the women achieving success. So, what’s there in this movie that makes it special? It’s the moments like the one where Shahrukh tries to make the girls from different regions and diverse backgrounds start playing together as a team, the one where he makes them understand that they are playing for their country and not representing their own states, the one where the girls unite and beat up the men at McDonalds (Those sort of men deserve that 😛 ), the one when Komal passes the ball to Preeti in the final match and lots more! Considering the standard of the current Hindi films, I wish more films like this one were made!
