For the past four days, I have been listening to only two songs again and again. They are Sonu Nigam’s Deewana (This one is of course not A.R.Rahman’s) and Rahman’s Lukka Chuppi. More than the music, one thing that had me hooked on to these two songs is the voice of Sonu Nigam & A.R.Rahman. The feel that they both bring to the songs with their voices is amazing.
Yesterday evening, I listened to the songs of Sivaji for the first time. After listening to Rahman singing a beautiful line like ‘Yahaan sab kuch hai maa phir bhi lage bin tere mujhko akela’ in Lukka Chuppi, his singing the line ‘Bun bun nee sweet bun’ in the song Athiradee didn’t appeal to me initially. After that, I listened to some of my favourites sung by Rahman since all I wanted to do was to listen to only the songs sung by him!

I am going to start with the climax! I love the climax and the location where it was shot too. Perfect choice! Madhubala runs down the steps and Arvind Samy too runs towards her. The first time he slips and falls, she hurries down the steps. Then, when he rolls down the steps, she lets out a cry and rushes towards him. Now, they are just a few feet away from each other. Unlike other movies where the heroine will run towards the hero immediately to help him, here, she herself becomes so weak with joy on seeing her husband after a long time that she is unable to even stand! Then, when he finally reaches her, they let their eyes and tears do the talking, he then calls her ‘Pattikkaadu’ and they both hug! No unnecessary dialogue between the couple. Their eyes and actions do all the talking! Wow!

Wishing A.R.Rahman and Saira Banu a Happy Wedding Anniversary! 🙂

Oru Naal Oru Pozhudhu
Though I have heard that Andhi Mandhaarai is one of A.R.Rahman’s best, blah, blah, (Well, we Rahman fans say that about almost all his songs 🙂 ) to tell the truth, I have not listened to it much inspite of having all the songs with me. 🙁 Thanks to Adiya’s comment for my earlier post, I decided to listen to all the songs from the movie today and I have got addicted to the song ‘Oru Naal Oru Pozhudhu’ (Of course, I have heard this one earlier too)! What a lovely song! Can’t stop listening to it! Thank you, Adiya!
There is soooo much left to explore in A.R.Rahman’s existing compositions itself. I have almost all the compositions of Rahman with me thanks to the A.R.Rahman Fans Yahoo group. I think I have to spend some 2-3 days to listen to all his compositions that I have not listened to much.
Talking about Rahman’s music, I can’t wait for the audio of ‘Sivaji’ to get released!
What I am doing today
From the morning, I have been listening to A.R.Rahman’s songs non-stop. I couldn’t resist posting a random list of my favourites of Rahman that I have been listening to since morning.
- Holi Re from Mangal Pandey – I listened to it for some 2 hours continuously yesterday thanks to so many of my friends who kept on wishing me a Happy Holi and this was the song that came to my mind as soon I heard the Holi wishes. I couldn’t help listening to it today too.
- Telephone Manipol from Indian – Rahman’s music! Hariharan and Harini’s singing! Wow!
- Pachchai Nirame from Alaipayuthey – I am not saying anything about this song apart from the fact that I watched it some 4 times today 🙂
- Poovukkenna Poottu from Bombay
- Theendai from En Swaasa Katre – A beautiful song based on Sri raagam!
- Swaasame from Thenali
- Girlfriend from Boys
- Pettai rap from Kadhalan – Even a Dappaankutthu song sounds nice when composed by Rahman 🙂
- July Madham from Pudhiya Mugam – I love the guitar in this song. Off late I have became quite crazy about Guitar Prasanna’s playing and incidentally he is the one who has played the guitar for this song.
- Hello Mister Ethirkatchi from Iruvar
- Aayo Re Sakhi from Water – This is my current favourite in Water.
- Kaatre En Vaasal from Rhythm
- Sonnaalum Kaetpadhillai from Kadhal Virus
- Uyirum Neeye from Pavithra – One of singer Unnikrishnan’s best (I don’t like his singing that much)! This song is based on one of my favourite raagas Khamas.
- Naan Paadum Sandham from Duet
- Then Maerkku from Karutthamma
- Malargale from Love Birds – Hariharan’s singing again!
- Thee Thee from Thiruda Thiruda – No words to describe this song. I just love it! I always increase the volume of my music system to as much as my ears can tolerate and listen to it. Btw, who is this Carolene who has sung this song? What other songs has she sung?
- Chikku Bukku Rayile from Gentleman
- Thirakkaadha KaattukuLLe from En Swaasa Katre
- My Wish comes True from Kisna – I love the flute interludes in this song.
- Strawberry KaNNe from Minsara Kanavu
I can go on and on but, I am stopping with this. As I have earlier said, I can never ever find the words to describe A.R.Rahman’s music. In spite of continuously listening to his music from the morning, I am not able to stop listening even now! Rahman Rocks!!!!
The Bucket Song!
Well, it seems that was how the song, Sandai kozhi/Kabhi Neem Neem from Aayitha Ezhuthu/Yuva was referred to by A.R.Rahman! I heard some RJ (if I remember correctly, it was Suchi) telling about it in Radio Mirchi at the time Aayitha Ezhuthu was released. It seems Mani Ratnam had initially wanted a song to picturized on the hero and heroine with the hero singing it to the heroine, tapping a bucket! It’s another thing that the song later got changed to the heroine singing it, but Rahman still called the track as the bucket song.
Coming to the picturization of this song, I like the picturization of Kabhi Neem Neem more than Sandai Kozhi. Abhishek and Rani is one pair that I like very much and is there anyone better than Mani Ratnam who can picturize a romantic song this beautifully! Enjoy watching the song here:
Guru a Hit Film!
It seems ‘Guru’ is the first hit of the year and it has completed 50 days! I very badly wanted to watch Guru in Inox but somehow I couldn’t make it all these days and when I finally decide that I will go this weekend, I see that since yesterday the movie is running only in Woodlands, not in Satyam too. 🙁 Anyway, I am happy that Mani Ratnam’s Hindi film has finally been declared a Hit in Bollywood.

A Rahmaniac’s dream come true!!!!
Warning: This post will be very long. But, then, if I don’t write a long post for this, for what else will I write? I want to relive every moment.
The Wait:
My sister & I reached Narada Gana Sabha at 4.55 pm itself for the programme that was to start at 6. Hardly 4 or 5 people were there. I approached a person who seemed to be incharge of the seating arrangements & asked him if we would be able to go near Rahman. When he gave me a positive answer that Rahman would be coming at around 6.10 through the side entrance and we may get a good chance of going near him, our excitement doubled up! Since we were told that we would be let in only after 5.30, we roamed around the place looking at the side entrance & thinking of whether we should go in first or we should wait till Rahman comes, see him (after all that was the only reason why we had gone there!), maybe take his photos and then go in. When we came back to the main entrance, we found a queue formed already. There were some 20 of them standing before us in the queue. Counting the minutes, we waited till we were finally let in at 5.50. Entering the auditorium, we found that the first 15 rows were reserved for members and VIPs and also a barrier had been put up to prevent anyone from going to the front. 🙁 Finding a place close to a side entrance/exit, we sat down.
After 6.30 or so, someone announced that they were waiting for ‘a very important guest’ to arrive and the programme would start shortly. The concert started at 6.45. Till that time, Rahman had not come and our eyes were only on the side entrance. My sister & I kept on talking about how we could run out when Rahman leaves, get his autograph, etc., etc. (Well, imagining & talking about it itself made us feel so great. Just imagine how we must’ve felt when the whole thing really happened!) We could see people sitting next to us give us strange looks hearing our talks. But, what would Non-Rahmaniacs understand!
After the first song, the host of the evening, Neelu, announced that soon A.R.Rahman would be handing over the first copy of the CD to Shri Vikku Vinayakram. At the mention of Rahman’s name, there was a huge round of applause! It was then that he said that Rahman was still on his way.
The first glimpse of the Man:
At around 7.20 pm, when the third song of the evening was going on, A.R.Rahman entered the auditorium! Our biggest dream got fulfilled at that moment! Thank you, Rahman! As soon as he entered, there was applause (though not a loud one, since Ganesh & Kumaresh were playing at that time). Once Rahman sat down in the first row, people kept on clicking photos standing (or rather kneeling down) very close to him. We were too excited to even move from our seats. Then, we went out through the exit near us & were about to get in through the first side entrance, when two people stopped us & said since some secretary was there, we could go in only after some 10 minutes. But, he assured us that we would indeed be able to go near Rahman after 10 minutes. But, I got a good look at Rahman through the half-opened door.
As close to Rahman as possible:
After 10 minutes, we again came back to the side entrance. This time the person asked us to go in! We literally ran and went close to Rahman! While my sister gave him the autograph book and asked for an autograph which he immediately signed, I knelt down and took this picture of him when he was signing the autograph for someone else:
Immediately, many people came to get his autograph and it became impossible for us to take a snap with him. After signing a few more autographs with our pen, Rahman gave back the pen to my sister and went to the stage to release the CD. I stood below the stage and took a video-clipping of Rahman in close-up when he was sitting on the stage with Vikku Vinayakram, Ganesh-Kumaresh and a few others. I just couldn’t believe that I was actually standing before him and taking his video!
Back to our seats:
Just before the CD was to be released, someone came and asked everyone standing below the stage to leave. We almost ran back to our place and again took a few snaps and video of Rahman releasing the CD and Rahman and Shri Vikku Vinayakram speaking. But, unfortunately, those have not come out well because of two reasons: One, we were sitting far away from the stage, so I had to zoom as much as possible and couldn’t focus the camera properly and two, I was too excited and couldn’t even hold the camera steadily! But, I guess the programme would be telecast on SS Music channel very soon and you can watch it in that. I will upload the videos very soon.
This is what Rahman spoke:
“Past two months, I have been traveling to like 4 countries. All of them asked me, So why do I live in Chennai? Well I have been thinking…. Well, my house is there, my studio is there….for another reason, we have Ganesh & Kumaresh here. I was sitting there & listening to Sahana it was absolutely amazing….Flightla erangumbodhu edho bore adicha music podaama Ganesh-Kumaresh music poattaanga….Railway stationo everywhere you know let their music be all over India….(some words)….God bless you.”
Bidding adieu to Rahman:
As soon as Rahman got up from the stage to leave, we ran out only to find a crowd waiting near Rahman’s car to meet him. After some 5 minutes or so, Rahman came out and people started applauding and shouting, ‘We love you Rahman!’. Amidst all this crowd, Rahman did sign autographs for a few of them, somehow managed to get into his car and left.
What a moment it was! The feeling is yet to sink in! My sister and I still can’t believe that we actually saw HIM and got his autograph! It all seems like a dream!
I saw Rahman!!!!!!
I still can’t believe I actually saw Rahman! I got his autograph too! I have taken a few photos and video clippings. (I couldn’t take one with him though) Will upload those very soon.
Yet to come back to earth! 🙂 A detailed write-up coming up very soon.
