Sanjay’s Concert

After missing concert after concert of T M Krishna and Sanjay Subrahmanyan for one whole month 🙁 , I finally went to Sanjay’s concert last Friday. The very thought of listening to Sanjay live after a long time had me excited the whole day and as expected, the excitement doubled up once the concert began. 🙂 With M.A.Sundaresan accompanying Sanjay on the violin, do I even have to say how the concert turned out to be? 🙂

Starting off with karuNai kadale in Kalyani, Sanjay then sang nannu kanna talli in Sindhukannada. A nice Reetigowlai Alapana followed next. Right after he started the song Paripalayamaam in Reetigowlai, I left the concert since I had some work and came back when he had started singing an alapana of Danyasi. After a couple of songs (Japa kusuma in Danyasi and Koniyadedu in Kokiladhwani) came the main piece of the concert – Maragatavalleem in Kambhoji. I got to listen to yet another wonderful Kambhoji by Sanjay! The icing on the cake was the Raagam Taanam Pallavi in Priyadarshini raagam that he sang right after the Kambhoji! I happened to know the existence of a raagam called Priyadarshini only on that day and it was amazing! It was only after this RTP that I came to know that the song that I had missed during the time I was not at the concert was Kamalamba navavarnam in Sahana replete with alapana, neraval and swarams! I missed Sanjay’s Sahana!!!! 🙁 All happiness at listening to a wonderful Priyadarshini gone! 🙁

After listening to aarukkum adangadha in Begada that he sang next, I got reminded of some of the wonderful Begada alapanas of Sanjay that I had listened to a few years back. I wish I get to hear him sing Begada as the main piece soon. The last song of the concert was a very beautiful Tillana in Ananda Bhairavi, yet another favourite raga of mine.

After attending such an excellent concert I was left confused as to which concert should I go to on Monday, Sanjay’s or TMK’s? Why did both of them have to sing on the same day at the same time? 🙁 Want to know whose concert did I finally go to on Monday? Wait for the next post 😉

Mandolin Srinivas’s Purnashadjam

Mandolin Srinivas’ playing has always left me amazed! This one is no exception. Lavanya Rama in Purnashadjam has always been one of my favourites. I am listening to this composition, Gananayakam, for the first time today and it has got me hooked to it now! I must say, this week has been a musically great week for me. 😉

Please listen to this one even if you are not a Carnatic music lover. I am sure you will enjoy it.

An RTP that made my day!

Just a few days before T M Krishna’s concert, I was telling my friend how great it would be if Sanjay or TMK sings Ragam Tanam Pallavi more often in concerts. Little did I know that I would be rewarded with one so soon! 🙂 I loved the Latangi RTP 🙂 I would say the Latangi compensated for the main piece in Todi. Yes you read it right. Hey wait! I am not saying anything about the way TMK sang it! His Todi was excellent as usual! 🙂

Ariyakudi to Semmangudi

Last Sunday, I attended the programme ‘Ariyakudi to Semmangudi’, a multimedia presentation on 15 past stalwarts (only vocalists were featured) of Carnatic music by Radha Bhaskar of Mudhra, held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Musicologist Dr. S.A.K.Durga spoke about the 15 stalwarts and her experience with them in the programme. Approximately 10 minutes was devoted to each stalwart with the multimedia presentation taking around 5 minutes followed by Durga sharing her experience with each of the stalwarts.

Gayathri Venkataraghavan’s Concert

Yesterday was the first time I went to a concert of Gayathri Venkataraghavan. If I remember correctly, the first time I listened to her sing on TV was about a year and a half back. At that time, I didn’t like her singing much. After that, I didn’t listen to her much. But, a 4-hour concert yesterday was too tempting to miss. Since the only thing that I wanted to listen to was Raagam Taanam Pallavi and being a 4-hour concert, there was no way an will not be sung, I went only at 6pm to the concert that had started at 4 itself. The next 2 and a half hours turned out to be the best part of the day what with the concert turning out to be an excellent one! I will surely go to Gayathri Venkataraghavan’s next concert if I am free on that day!
